An exploration into the question of greatness from the Chief Classical Music Critic of the New York Times When he began to listen to the great works of classical music as a child, Anthony Tommasini had many questions. Why did a particular piece move him? How did the music work? Over time, he realized that his passion for this music was not enough. He needed to understand it. Take Bach, for starters. Who was he? How does one account for his music and its unshakeable hold on us today? As a critic, Tommasini has devoted particular attention to living composers and overlooked repertory. But, like all classical music lovers, the canon has remained central for him. In 2011, in his role as the Chief Classical Music Critic for the New York Times, he wrote a popular series in which he somewhat cheekily set out to determine the all-time top ten composers. Inviting input from readers, Tommasini wrestled with questions of greatness. Readers joined the exercise in droves. Some railed against classical music's obsession with greatness but then raged when Mahler was left off the final list. This intellectual game reminded them why they loved music in the first place. Now in THE INDISPENSABLE COMPOSERS, Tommasini offers his own personal guide to the canon--and what greatness really means in classical music. What does it mean to be canonical now? Who gets to say? And do we have enough perspective on the 20th century to even begin assessing it? To make his case, Tommasini draws on elements of biography, the anxiety of influence, the composer's relationships with colleagues, and shifting attitudes toward a composer's work over time. Because he has spent his life contemplating these titans, Tommasini shares impressions from performances he has heard or given or moments when his own biography proves revealing. As he argues for his particular pantheon of indispensable composers, Anthony Tommasini provides a masterclass in what to listen for and how to understand what music does to us.Binding Type: Paperback

Really nice first book set for little hands
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This is such a great little book set! The books are small, have sturdy hard pages, and are super easy for little hands to flip through. My baby is 11 months old, and these are honestly perfect for this stage, they’re simple, engaging, and just the right size for early learning. I really like that each book has its own theme (like wild animals, transport, shapes, etc.). It keeps things interesting and helps introduce new words in a fun and easy way. Another big plus for me is that the pictures are photo-realistic, which I think is really important when babies are learning about the world, they can actually connect what they see in the book to real life.
The quality of the set is excellent, the images are bright, colorful, and crisp, and the books feel durable enough to handle lots of use (and chewing, let’s be honest). I also love the sturdy box it comes in, it keeps everything organized and makes cleanup easy. Overall, such a nice little library to read and enjoy with your baby. Definitely recommend!

Perfect Purchase
Format: Hardcover
Wonderful. Perfect size for little hands. Colorful. Caught my grandson’s attention as soon as my son unwrapped it. A good number of choices, so it’s easy to keep my grandson’s attention for over. 1/2 hour.
I’d say that’s terrific for a little guy.
All in all, this is the best set of books I’ve bought. Money well spent! He’ll probably wear them out before a little brother or sister comes along 😂

Perfect for first baby books.
Format: Hardcover
Loved these for my first daughter a few years ago and they definitely got their use. I wanted to make sure I got a new set for my newborn. They are perfect for learning all the basics with large pictures that help them associate with the labeled word. Easy to travel with boards books that baby’s can hold as they learn to grip items.

Realistic pictures, Good for vocabulary learning
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Small and not very durable, but realistic and great for learning vocabulary. My 1yr old likes looking at the pictures and can handle the books well since they are small. If left unsupervised with them, they’d get destroyed. But it’s a good learning activity to do together. Would be nice if they were a little more durable but hey, they were cheap enough. I would pay more for a higher quality set.
